Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the hotly anticipated reimagining of a franchise classic, has been delayed over a month from March 3 to April 10, according to a tweet from the game’s official Japanese Twitter account. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was the star of several different trade shows across 2019, winning many of the best of E3 awards it was eligible for while also wowing critics who were able to go hands-on with the title over the summer.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake follows Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, and Barret as they journey through the slums of Midgar in an attempt to liberate the city from its greedy corporate overlords - and save the planet from the environmental disaster being wrought upon it by the same company, Shinra. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a complete rework of the original, featuring a drastically overhauled combat system that reworks everything from basic attacks to the way that FF7 Remake summons work. Square Enix has also developed the game with episodic content in mind, as the first instalment of the game will cover the game’s narrative up until the team departs Midgar for the first time.
Despite the narrowed scope of the narrative, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is still a full game, and it’s evidently one that needs a little bit more time. In a tweet released by the official Final Fantasy 7 Remake Japanese Twitter account, the team explained that the game would be delayed from March 3, 2020 to April 10, 2020. No official reasoning was given in the tweet, although the team did apologize for the delay.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the latest PlayStation 4 exclusive to be hit with a delay after The Last of Us 2 pushed its own release date back from February this year to spring. It’s another major blow to Sony’s exclusive lineup, which is now scheduled to begin making waves much later than was initially planned. While it’s likely not enough to do anything to harm the image of the PS4, and delays are almost always a good thing for game quality and the health of a development team, it is still an unfortunate circumstance that so many - and for such important games - were grouped together.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be one of 2020’s biggest releases, and a month-long delay in the grand scope of the game’s development time - which has spanned years at this point - is hardly a blip on the radar. Fans should be glad that Final Fantasy 7 Remake is being given the time it needs to be the best title it can be, and Square Enix deciding to push for the delay so close to release is a courageous decision that will likely pay off for both studio and consumer.
