Final Fantasy 7 Remake will remove materia in favor of newer options, says director Tetsuya Nomura. The game will be making several significant overhauls to the experience many fans remember from the 1997 original, including drastic changes to the game’s combat and movement systems.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was the best game at E3 2019 and impressed many of those in attendance with an expansive, tantalizing trailer that showed off a reimagined Midgar. That, coupled with a hands-on experience that saw players take down the Scorpion Tank boss from the game’s first playable section, left fans optimistic about a game that has previously been divisive in the way it has handled the remake process. Despite the major changes coming to the game, it appears Nomura and the rest of the team are committed to preserving a lot of the game’s overall aesthetic and narrative, including the controversial Final Fantasy 7 Remake cross-dressing scene that will have significant revisions made to it.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura revealed details about Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s materia system, a first for the game. Nomura stated that the core philosophy behind the materia system will stay the same - players will be able to slot the magical gems into their equipment to modify their character’s abilities and performance. However, because the game will feature a completely different combat system to accompany the materia choices, Nomura also stated that some materia will be removed from the game.
Luckily, the development team will also be adding new materia into Final Fantasy 7 Remake to compensate and to adjust for the different mechanics involved in the new title. While Nomura didn’t go into details, it seems likely that there will be materia that affects things that were previously irrelevant in the original, like movement speed, attack radius, and more. Even if those aren’t the exact specifics of the new materia, fans can likely expect it to revolve around the systems that weren’t in the original Final Fantasy 7. Nomura also stated that materia slotted into equipment will be visible on characters throughout gameplay, like the brief glimpses of materia slotted into Cloud’s buster sword and Barret’s gun showed during the E3 2019 trailer.
The bigger question, however, is just what materia will be removed from the game, rather than what’s being added. If we had to bet, things like Sense and All might get the axe - Sense because it was never particularly popular and can probably be modified into something more useful, and All because a more involved combat system means it’s probably possible to line up enemies to take AoE attacks already. As long as Knights of the Round is present, though, we’re sure old school fans will be more than happy with whatever needs to give way for the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake materia to shine.
