One of the richest and most refreshing parts of the series Firefly was the way the writing handled the romantic relationships within the show. Love and romance happened in a very relatable way. There was the awkward tension between Kaylee and Sam, the comfortable and familiar love between husband and wife Wash and Zoe, and self-caused isolation of Jayne. The show included representations of all kinds of single people and couples alike. Some of the characters would have made excellent partners to each other if the story had ever explored those relationships.
Wash And Kaylee
Wash and Kaylee have some adorable traits in common. Both characters are youthful and childlike in a lot of ways. Kaylee and Wash would be a tender, warm and cuddly couple. he pair you always find curled up on the couch. The kind of couple you love to make fun of for being so in love. Kaylee is a strong character but she’s also naive. Wash is a bit more worldly. He also has gentle leadership skills. This could make him an excellent confidant and advisor if Kaylee were his partner. While wash is often prone to melancholy and melodrama Kaylee is incredibly cheerful. This balance of personalities would make a great couple.
Jayne And Wash
Wash and Jayne may seem like oil and water at first but on closer inspection, they’d make a fantastic power couple. Wash is married to Zoe in the series. She’s a strong-willed character who often gets her way.
Wash knows when it’s time to stand up for himself and when it’s time to compromise. This would be a great asset in a relationship with a stubborn partner like Jayne. Jayne is somewhat prone to rash and impulsive behavior. Wash is more cool-headed and rational. He could serve as a grounding force if he was in a relationship with Jayne.
Inara And Mal
Mal and Inara have an incredible amount of on-screen chemistry. The tension between these two characters is palpable. Mal is a rough and unrefined foot soldier who knows the criminal world like the back of his hand. Inara is as polished and refined as they come and not without her own savvy. As a couple, the two could greatly inspire each other to personal growth. Inara is an ambitious businesswoman who could revolutionize Mal’s smuggling work. She could also expose him to some of the finer things in life along the way.
Jayne And Kaylee
Jayne and Kaylee would be a perfect example of opposites attracting each other. Jayne is a sledgehammer. Kaylee is a rose. What Jayne desperately needs in his life is the positive influence of someone with a gentle heart. Kaylee’s gentle and compassionate ways could rub off on the brash Jayne. This couple could easily be accused of encouraging stereotypes of both of their genders. Kaylee’s brains could be a great asset to Jayne’s brawn.
Kaylee And River
Kaylee and River would be an adorable couple. River is brilliant and a force to be reckoned with. This makes her a great partner for Kaylee who needs someone intelligent to talk to. Kaylee is bright but a bit less street-savvy. River’s incredible instincts for people and finely honed combat skills would make her well suited to protect a more trusting partner like Kaylee.
Both of these characters have a wide range of skills. Between the two of them, they could pilot and repair any ship in the verse. This couple would be a well-rounded powerhouse of deadly force and creative thinking. This could have been the greatest couple on Firefly.
Zoe And Jayne
Zoe and Jayne make a terrifying couple. These two are both formidable opponents on the battlefield. Jayne has very questionable morals while Zoe is hardened from her time in the rebellion. She’s learned that sometimes you have to do the unthinkable to get results. There’s no foe these two couldn’t take on together.
Zoe has a great advantage over Jayne. She has training and a cool head to rely on to get her out of tough spots. Jayne is prone to acting out of impulse and getting himself into trouble. Calm and commanding Zoe could be the best thing that ever happened to him.
Mal And Zoe
Mal and Zoe have been through a lot together. They had each other’s backs in the rebellion and formed an inseparable bond. They would make an excellent couple just based on their deep level of intimacy and trust alone. Great relationships are born from great friendships. It takes years to build what Mal and Zoe. The two of them would be an unstoppable force.
River And Jayne
River and Jayne don’t make much sense on the surface. River is incredibly intelligent and thoughtful. Jayne seems to run on testosterone and motor oil. That’s exactly what makes them a great match. Jayne needs a strong partner who can stand up to his gruff attitude. River would probably find Jayne’s personality fascinating because it’s so different from her own.
Lenore And Jayne
This couple needs very little explanation. If there was any other character suited to Mr. Universe’s love bot it’s Jayne. There would be very little potential for personal growth in this relationship as Lenore wouldn’t push Jayne out of his comfort zone.
River And Mr. Universe
Mr. Universe may be one of the best characters to pair up with River. He’s a little socially awkward but he’s also incredibly brilliant. River and Mr. Universe could spend hours talking about a wide range of topics and never get bored of each other. That kind of bond is rare and precious. River is also an expert swordsman which is of obvious value to Mr. Universe. After all, his wife Lenore is beautiful, deadly and intelligent so we know River is just his type. River is very inquisitive. Mr. Universe could make a great partner for her with his never-ending feed of information to share.
