Legendary launches a Pacific Rim Uprising viral site and teaser that introduce John Boyega as the film’s protagonist, Jake Pentecost. Guillermo del Toro first introduced a world of gigantic kaiju monsters and the massive man-made robots piloted by pairs of soldiers to fight the creatures in his 2013 film Pacific Rim. The movie starred Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket, a former pilot who had lost his brother during a fight and left the Jaeger program. He rejoined at a later point to team up with Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) under the command of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) in a last ditch effort to defeat the kaiju.
Although Pacific Rim wasn’t well received by critics, it did earn $411 million at the worldwide box office and became a favorite among fans of del Toro’s work. As such, many clamored for Legendary to green light a sequel, which the studio eventually did. However, del Toro stepped down as director, handing the reigns over to Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil). Now, though the film isn’t set to premiere until early 2018 - and a trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising isn’t quite ready yet - we’ve got our first look at the movie’s new star suited up as a Jaeger pilot.
Legendary launched a viral marketing website for Pacific Rim: Uprising called Go Jaeger focused on the Jaeger program, specifically encouraging viewers to “Join the Jaeger Uprising.” A video released with the website [above] teases the new Jaegers that will appear in the Pacific Rim sequel and features Boyega’s Jake Pentecost giving one final plea for viewers to join the uprising. The Go Jaeger website also features blueprints of the five new Jaegers that will appear in Uprising; take a look in the gallery below:

Of course, we’ve seen leaked images of the Jaeger blueprints from displays earlier this year, but this is the first time fans can take an up close look at all the upgraded features of Uprising’s kaiju-fighting robots. While Pacific Rim featured a Jaeger program on its last legs - and, as such, many of the robots were older machines - Uprising seems to be including state-of-the-art technology in its Jaegers. These weapons, like Gipsy Avenger’s chain sword and Titan Reseemer’s morning star, should provide for even bigger and better action in DeKnight’s follow up.
As for Boyega’s character, we know that Jake is the son of Pacific Rim’s Stacker Pentecost, who fans will remember sacrificed himself at the end of del Toro’s 2013 film. The footage used in this viral site teaser likely doesn’t come from Uprising itself, but it may hint that the new and improved Jaegers won’t need a co-pilot system of drift compatible soldiers since Jake appears to be on his own in his Jaeger. That would prove to be an interesting update on the world established in Pacific Rim - especially if the soldiers are then forced to pair up and use an older Jaeger that needs two pilots.
Of course, it remains to be seen if that’s the case, but we’ll no doubt learn more about the sequel once an official trailer is released. Since Legendary is getting the ball rolling on promoting the film with this viral site, it may not be long before we get a Pacific Rim Uprising trailer.
