Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher and Richard Roundtree are looking suave in the first image from Son of Shaft. Excitement has been brewing over the Shaft reboot, which has turned into a multi-generational project starring Roundtree, who originated the role of Detective John Shaft in Shaft in 1971; Jackson, who played his nephew (also named John Shaft) in the 2000 reboot; and Independence Day: Resurgence star Usher, who is playing Jackson’s son, John Shaft Jr.
The production started filming earlier this month with Tim Story (Ride Along) at the helm, and to commence the production, Roundtree, Jackson and Usher got together for a photo with the son of the late, legendary Shaft Oscar-winning composer Isaac Hayes. It was a momentous occasion for all the parties involved, given it’s a rarity for a film franchise to get one chance at being rebooted, much less two. And while it took 18 years from the last Shaft film to the start of filming of the new one, the multi-generational photo tweeted by the younger Hayes proved that the production was worth the wait.
Now, with about three weeks of filming under their belts, fans are being treated to a look at the Shaft trio in action. In a new Instagram post by acclaimed fashion designer Aleks Musika, Usher, Jackson and Roundtree are pictured together, all wearing black shades, matching gray turtlenecks, slacks and rust-colored trench coats, strutting their stuff in-tandem. Musika marked the occasion by quoting a line from Hayes’ “Theme from Shaft,” saying “YOU ARE DAAAMN RIGHT!” and going onto to say, “This Was One of The Toughest Projects We Have Had to Do Yet, Shout Out to Our Whole @musikafrere Team.” See Musika’s post with the photo below:
It’s hard to say what Musika’s exact involvement is on Son of Shaft, since Olivia Miles, who previously worked with Story on Ride Along 2, is billed as the costume designer on the film. Musika, meanwhile, has an impressive list of clients include such entertainers as Jay Z, Michael B. Jordan, Kevin Hart and Beyoncé.
After this cool first look at the costumes from this first photo from the film, it will be interesting to see what other stunning looks Miles comes up with in her work on the film. Movie fans, along with fashion industry types, are all sure to take notice when Son of Shaft debuts in theaters in June 2019.
