A first look at Walt Disney World’s Star Wars hotel reveals that guests staying there will be experiencing what life is like on a starship. Over the past few years, Disney decided to bank big on Star Wars at its theme parks. This began with constructing a new land at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World called Galaxy’s Edge. Although Galaxy’s Edge is already open for business at Disneyland, the land will officially open its doors at Walt Disney World on Aug. 29.
The new land is themed as the Black Spire Outpost, a village that exists in the Outer Rim on a planet called Batuu. The immersive world includes cast members in character, along with droid-building and lightsaber-creating opportunities. There are also themed dining and shopping establishments. Guests can also see a host of characters straight out of Star Wars, including Kylo Ren and Chewbacca. They can even ride the Millennium Falcon, as well as participate in the Rise of the Resistance attraction scheduled to open in late 2019 at Walt Disney World and early 2020 at Disneyland. Part of the Star Wars additions, though, also include a hotel at Walt Disney World, of which the company released concept art in 2018.
Entertainment reporter Germain Lussier recently tweeted the first look at this hotel from D23. The hotel’s name is Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which has guests staying on a starship called the Halcyon.
Previous reports about the hotel suggest guests will become part of an immersive experience that will include “high-end dining, space-view cabins and all of the exciting action you would expect from an authentic Star Wars experience.” Guests will get to participate in their very own Star Wars story, including dressing the part. One thing that hasn’t yet been mentioned, though, is the price of this stay, although rumors suggest it could cost around $1000 per guest for a two-night stay.
That’s a hefty price tag, particularly when the opening of Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland hasn’t done quite as well as expected. Attendance at Disneyland has been lower than anticipated, although Disney has blamed overcrowding concerns, increased ticket prices and Rise of the Resistance not yet being open. Walt Disney World could see similar attendance problems, but even if it doesn’t, the concept of the Star Wars hotel seems like a risky one. Will Star Wars fans pay thousands of dollars per night for a place they mostly sleep in when at Disney Parks? Or will the hotel become an attraction in and of itself? No one will know until the hotel opens its doors, but Disney still has not yet announced an official launch date.
