Netflix is set to drop every episode of the recent U.K. crime thriller Collateral early next month, and now there’s a new trailer to get you hooked before the inevitable binge-watch. Like anthologies, limited series have been gaining in popularity in the US as of late, particularly because of their ability to attract top-notch talent and often deliver a viewing experience that’s often on par with feature films. And the newest limited series to hit Netflix certainly has an impressive enough cast and intriguing premise behind it to warrant some buzz ahead of its March 9 premiere.
Similar to Peaky Blinders, another import picked up by the service, Collateral will have already aired in the U.K. before it lands on the U.S. side of Netflix’s streaming shores. But since you’ll be able to binge-watch all four episodes as quickly as you like, that should help assuage any potential TV envy you feel to viewers across the pond.
What’s being offered is a crime drama starring Carey Mulligan, Billie Piper, Nicola Walker, and John Simms that investigates a seemingly random murder in a surprisingly short span of time, one where it quickly becomes clear it’s anything but random, and the truth may be a much darker than Mulligan’s detective first thought. While the synopsis provides plenty of details, the trailer gives a better feel as to what the tone of the series is, and it looks to be fairly heavy and considerably dark. Perhaps because of the way the trailer was cut, there’s a hint of HBO’s The Night Of in terms of its style, though Collateral seems far more urgent in terms of its pace and storytelling. And since the preview mercifully doesn’t give too much away in terms of what roles Piper and Scott are playing, there’s plenty of mystery to unpack alongside the one at the core of the show.
“In Collateral, a young man is shot dead delivering a pizza in South London. The detective in charge, DI Kip Glaspie (Carey Mulligan), quickly discovers that the pizza manager inexplicably sent Syrian refugee Abdullah Asif (Sam Otto) instead of the regular delivery driver.
Set over the course of four days, the spiraling repercussions surrounding Abdullah’s murder are explored. Politician David Mars (John Simm) becomes instantly embroiled in the drama through his turbulent relationship with his ex-wife Karen who took delivery of the pizza. While Jane Oliver (Nicola Walker), a compassionate vicar, struggles to conceal her affair with the sole witness to the crime.”
Collateral comes on a busy week for Netflix, with Jessica Jones season 2 dropping just a day prior and the final season of Love arriving the same day. If you’re serious about your binge watching, early March should keep you busy for a few days at least.
