The first X-Men: Dark Phoenix images are here, showing a transformed Jean Grey and characters attending a funeral. Looking at the source material, the character in the most danger is of course Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey. As this is the second time that the X-Men films have adapted “The Dark Phoenix Saga”, fans have been waiting to see how this new version of Dark Phoenix will differ from Famke Jansen’s transformation in X-Men: The Last Stand.
X-Men: Apocalypse introduced a new era for the X-Men by forming a new class of heroes consisting of younger versions of Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Jean Grey. The sequel, Dark Phoenix, takes the X-Men into the 1990s to battle aliens, including a shapeshifter played by Jessica Chastain. Also featured in the film are Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Professor Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn).
EW has obtained images from Dark Phoenix that shows four of the X-Men gathered together for a funeral in the rain. Shown in the picture are Professor Xavier, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, and Storm. Since much of the cast is absent from the photo, it’s difficult to say which character was killed. There was already a rumor floating around that Dark Phoenix would kill off a major character. You can check out that photo, along with the others, below.
We also get an early look at Jean Grey’s transformation. Jean, apparently naked, is covered in flames. Much like DC’s Firestorm, Jean’s hair appears to be made of fire. According to writer/director Simon Kinberg, post-production for the film will take nearly a year, allowing for more time to perfect the visual effects for Jean’s transformation. This new version seems more visually stunning and conveys a stronger sense of power than the previous iteration of Dark Phoenix.
Also included in EW’s image gallery are pictures of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, a spaceship, and an emotionally troubled Jean Grey. Sophie Turner says that playing Jean in Dark Phoenix required being able to portray two different personalities. Turner studied schizophrenia in order to help her instantly transition from “broken-down Jean” to the arrogant and judgmental Dark Phoenix.
Fans will have to wait and see if Dark Phoenix will provide Jean Grey with a happier ending than the “The Dark Phoenix Saga” or X-Men: The Last Stand.
